KRK Systems Rokit RP10-3

Home studio owners are spoilt for choice. KRK is just one of the many manufacturers that have flooded the market with accurate, revealing near-fields at attractive prices.
Strangely, affordable options are much more limited in the three-way monitor market. KRK's new Rokit RP10-3s aim to address this discrepancy, bringing three-way monitoring down to an affordable new price point.
"The RP10s are highly capable monitors that compete favourably with products twice their price."

The RP10s bear significant similarities to the rest of KRK's Rokit range, featuring front-firing ports, a vinyl-coated MDF enclosure, glass/aramid low-frequency driver and a one-inch soft dome tweeter. The major difference is the presence of a third driver; where the rest of the Rokit range are two-way designs, the RP10s are a three-way design with a 10-inch woofer and 4-inch mid-range driver.
For our test I borrowed a pair of RP8 G2s in order to make a direct comparison. The difference in physical stature between the two monitors is obvious, and on setting them up together and trying them side-by-side it's clear that the sonic difference is equally dramatic.
Click here to find out more!
The RP10 is significantly better in every respect: the bottom end's tighter and deeper, there's no honkiness from the port at any listening level, the mid-range is more detailed and transparent, and the top end is smoother and more revealing. The RP10s don't sound hi-fi in the hyped, flattering sense, but there's an enjoyably involving character to the sound that's missing from the smaller models.

Fat bottoms

The RP10s' low-end frequency response is seriously deep, with a bump at around 40Hz followed by a gentle roll-off down to the -3dB point at 31Hz. Needless to say, you won't need a subwoofer with these.
Strangely, KRK has chosen not to offer acoustic space settings to tame the bottom end. Instead, you'll have to make do with adjusting the LF level switches, but the maximum of 2dB low frequency attenuation might not be enough to compensate for placement near a wall or other equipment.
Soffit mounting is also out of the question, but horizontal placement is made possible thanks to a rotating sub-baffle which houses the tweeter and mid.
Given that most of the competition costs at least twice as much as the RP10s, it's inevitable that there must be compromises in the design. Like the smaller monitors in the Rokit range, the frequency response of the RP10s isn't the flattest we've ever heard.
Likewise, they certainly aren't the most powerful three-way design you'll find, with a 30W class A-B amplifier for the highs, 30W for the mids and 80W for the bass. Even so, they're relatively efficient and there's plenty of clean power before the amps break up.

Denon DN-SC3900

Denon DJ is proud to introduce the SC3900: Digital Turntable and Media Controller with 9-inch Active Platter. Utilizing a completely redesigned High-Torque Direct Drive Motor that exactly mirrors the feel of vinyl, the SC3900 brings home that familiar feel but with the choice of CD, USB, Software, or even a networked Media server as your source of tracks.
DJing has progressed to a new era with the evolution of digital media. In a world that was once first dominated by vinyl, then CDs, and now the emerging USB and streaming devices, it's time to revolutionize the DJ booth, because right now as a DJ you make a choice between DJing with a turntable, a turntable and software, or a CDJ/Controller. No one device has ever managed to give you the flexibility to choose depending on your performance, style or your audience. That is, until now.

"The 9-inch platter makes scratch moves more nimble by being that little bit smaller, but maintains the perfect amount of space to grip it, scratching & mixing tracks feels no different than using vinyl" --DJ Switch, SC3900 endorsee and 3x World DMC Champion.

Years of development with top international DJs has allowed Denon DJ to perfect the platter of the SC3900 for use with digital media without losing that feel of vinyl (the surface of the platter is actually a 9" vinyl disc!) – all allowing Scratch DJ champions like DJ Switch to push their performances even further than possible with a vinyl ‘record'.
"Doing DMC-style hard-core scratch sets are made so much easier without worrying about needles & skipping records" --DJ Switch

Playback and scratch tracks from a myriad of sources including USB ‘sticks' or USB Hard Disk Drives via the top mounted USB port. This allows the move from venue to venue with just a single USB device and not a laptop or CD collection, although the SC3900 can also playback CDs via the front loading CD slot, giving you true flexibility of your media choices.

The SC3900 also comes complete with the brand new ‘Engine' music management software that has been designed with players such as the SC3900 in mind, allowing the ultimate in DJ set preparation, playback and control.
Prepare the perfect set in the studio or on a computer at home, then export it to a USB stick or Hard Disk Drive and have everything needed for your DJ performance in a device small enough to fit in your pocket. Then, when it's time to perform simply plug in and play, and even share the USB drive's files with up to three other compatible players over a network.

Once your networked players are sharing the music from one USB device, it's easy to manage, cue, and play to any player via an iPad with the new Engine iPad app (requires downloading from the App Store). Engine for iPad seamlessly controls your set wirelessly through a network – all via its large full-colour touchscreen. And there is no need to worry about computer or connection problems; should the iPad become disconnected, your music is still securely connected to the player via USB, leaving playback, and your audience's attention, uninterrupted.

Additionally, playback of files on your PC or MAC is possible with the included ‘Engine' music management software which doesn't even require a high specification computer to work quickly and efficiently. With file searching speeds that leaves most other software standing still, Engine's power is achieved by leaving the intensive audio processing at the player so the software is free to run before, or during your performance, utilizing the full capabilities of your computer.
Prepare music on a USB device, playback music through Engine PC or Mac software, and control via networked players or even through a network connected iPad.
Hybrid MIDI mode has been a flexible feature and a great benefit to previous Denon DJ devices and it's no different with the SC3900. Complete with the ability to be MIDI mapped to work with a wide variety of applications, the SC3900 can control DJ software utilizing DVS, without using time code CDs, making the SC3900 the most complete and flexible player Denon DJ has ever produced.

For performers who can't or don't want to choose between software, vinyl, CD, and digital media as well as those who want the ability to use one controller that doesn't rely on a high-spec computer to perform, the Denon DJ SC3900 is the player that you have been waiting for.

Audio-Technica ATH-M50 Professional Studio Headphones

Audio-Technica ATH-M50 Professional Studio Headphones

Audio-Technica ATH-M50 Studio Headphones
This great set of headphones are designed for monitoring and mixing and are made to collapse for easier storage as well. The ear pieces will turn up to 180 degrees for one ear monitoring. The cups are padded for comfort and will help seal in all the sound so you can do a better job. The headband is adjustable and padded for a more custom fit.

These headphones get really good reviews from users all over, though there are a very, very few that say they are not comfortable and can lead to headaches. It all boils down to the shape of your head paired with the right design of headphones. And again, some reviews have explained that these headphones are a bit heavy. If you have a particularly small head and ears, they might be a bit too heavy and large for you.

The features that I personally love about these headphones are the great bass, the noise isolation technology and the way the headphones comfortably sit against the chest when not in use, instead of doing the chin bump thing. I recommend you use these with an equalizer to bring out the full potential in sound.

Numark Mixdeck Quad Announced

Numark Mixdeck Quad Announced
The Mixdeck Quad is supplied with 2-deck Traktor LE software in Europe and 4-deck VirtualDJ software in North and South America. As well as digital files from computer, the Mixdeck Quad can play tracks from CD, MP3 CD, flash drives and also from iPad, via apps such as Djay from Algoriddim. A built-in USB / MIDI audio interface provides software control and audio streaming.
Mixdeck Quad comes with a set of beat-sync and pitch controls to aid with beat matching and harmonic mixing. On loading a track, the unit automatically analyses the BPM and displays this on screen. There is also a facility for manual Tap BPM entry. Pitch control ranges are ±6%, 12%, 25% and 100%. A key lock function holds the key of a track while the BPM is varied.
The mixer section is a fully functioning 4-channel mixer, with each channel having gain control and 3-band EQ / rotary kills (+ 12 dB / -∞). The channels can be connected to incoming audio from the onboard players, computer or external sources such as turntables, CD decks or MP3 players. The mixer cross fader is replaceable and features curve adjust and reverse. A cueing section has dual 1/8 and 1/4-inch headphone outputs, dedicated cue gain and a mini cross fader.
The deck sections of the Mixdeck Quad have all the usual features that we would expect to find on a CD / media player, including large touch-sensitive illuminated jog wheels and fast slot-loading CD drives. The jog wheels also feature adjustable start and stop times for a vinyl-like feel. A fader start function allows a cued-up track to start playing when the cross fader is moved; this function also works with compatible external CD players.
Each deck section has a large backlit display for BPM, CD / MP3 tags and folder navigation.
The Mixdeck Quad features a selection of beat-synced DSP effects: wet / dry fader, chop, echo, filter, pan and phaser. Further creative possibilities come from seamless looping controls, a sampler and hot cues. The Numark Bleep / Reverse function allows the DJ to keep time moving forward whilst cutting or reversing a track.
Inputs include two mic (XLR and 1/4-inch with gain and 2-band EQ), four Aux (RCA stereo pairs), iPad connector and USB. Outputs are Main (balanced XLR and RCA), Booth (RCA), Record (RCA), decks 1 and 2 (RCA) and cue (1/8 and 1/4-inch). The direct stereo output from each deck allows the use of timecode control interfaces such as Serato Scratch Live, or external effects units.
